Mother Charged With Obstructing A Police Officer
WSIL -- An Effingham County woman has been charged with obstructing a police officer.
Ciara DeRyke is accused of lying to investigators about the last time she saw her daughter Willow Long. The seven-year-old was stabbed to death in September 2013 at her home in Watson.
Prosecutors say mother Ciara DeRyke told police she had seen Willow on the morning of September 8th. But, investigators later determined the girl had been killed the night before.
Prosecutors do not know why DeRyke lied, but they don't believe the mother took part in her daughter's murder or knew about her death at the time.
Willow Long's uncle, Justin DeRyke, is charged with killing the girl and dumping her body south of Watson. He is set to go on trial in February.
