Memorial Hospital Breaks Ground on Expansion
CARBONDALE -- Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is about to grow. Thursday the hospital announced it's expanding its Surgical and Intensive Care units.
Officials from Memorial Hospital broke ground on the new $52-million expansion Thursday morning. The new addition will allow eight more beds in the Intensive Care Unit, and three additional operating rooms. That will allow the hospital to take in more patients. Hospital officials say the expansion is necessary to meet the needs of the community.
Southern Illinois Healthcare President and Chief Executive officer Rex Budde says, "It helps us take care of patients into the foreseeable future...We've got to have these kinds of projects in order to be ready for the changes coming into healthcare." Dr. David Clutts goes on to say, "Having a new operating room with the ability to expand and facilitate the new procedures we're able to do here."
Along with the new addition the hospital will remodel its pre-operation and post operation areas to better accommodate patients needs. Construction on the project should wrap up in 2017.
