IDOT Lays Out Five-Year Plan
WILLIAMSON CO. -- The Illinois Department of Transportation's five-year plan for Southern Illinois was presented to the public Wednesday night.
Those plans include revamping the Interstate 57-Route 13 interchange. One overpass will be built from Sinclair Dr. to Skyline Dr. in Marion and another at 13 and Wolf Creek Rd. Crainville.
At I-57 and Route 13, work is already underway on a project that will continue through 2014, transforming the interchange from a cloverleaf to a diamond with traffic lights controlling the ramps. North of that interchange, drivers will be able to exit east or west or continue straight to the Star Bonds district, where Marion hopes to lure a destination development.
IDOT also plans to make things easier for drivers heading west on 13, by eliminating the wait for train crossings. A bridge over the railroad will end at Skyline Dr. The project is expected to be finished late next year.
It won't be the only new overpass on 13. At Wolf Creek Rd., plans to add an overpass are in the early stages. IDOT will also add frontage roads and bike paths along 13.
Changes are also coming to the intersection of Route 13 and Greenbriar. Some work is already underway, but Engineer Travis Emery says IDOT has to strike deals with a handful of homeowners and businesses to clear the way for the projects.
"Most people were able to come to some kind of consensus on what the property is worth and acquire it without any type of legal action," says Emery.
IDOT officials say those are the major projects in the pipeline right now. Further down the line, IDOT is looking at an interstate that runs from Paducah to Cape Girardeau. That project is in the beginning stages right now.
