WILLIAMSON COUNTY -- A major lane shift is expected to impact traffic on Route 13 in Marion. Drivers will soon get to travel on a new overpass.

"We're going to have eastbound and westbound traffic utilizing the new structure," said IDOT engineer Doug Helfrich.

The eastbound railroad overpass on the west side of town is set to handle traffic this week, once construction crews remove roadblocks.

"There is a lot of pavement striping and moving around concrete barriers that has to happen," explained Helfrich. "It's probably going to take a couple of evenings to get that full configuration in place."

On Monday evening, crews began working on the lane shift. Once the switch is complete, crews will begin building a westbound overpass.

IDOT engineers are also working on a construction project in Jefferson County.

"You have two interstates coming together all at once," said Helfrich. "The pavement up in Mt. Vernon was well beyond its serviceable life so all that had to be reconstructed."

Three miles of north and southbound highway, near the intersections of I-57 and I-64, is set to be repaved.

"This is not a lane addition," explained Helfirch. "This is us rehabilitating the existing lanes we have out there now."

On Monday, crews began work on the more than $12 million project. The work will run through the end of the construction season and will require lane closures, but no major traffic delays are anticipated.

"One advantage that we have, is that we have the additional third lane that we constructed last year," said Helfrich. "So we don't anticipate the traffic issues that we had on the previous job."
