SPRINGFIELD, IL (AP) - Two Illinois firefighters killed in the line of duty last year were honored for their bravery at a ceremony in Springfield.

Gov. Pat Quinn and hundreds of firefighters gathered Tuesday to recognize Chris Brown and Lawrence "Lance" Stone at the state Capitol. Their families were presented with the Duty Death Gold Badge.

Brown was a firefighter with the Hudson Community Fire District and the Bloomington Fire Department. Stone served with the West Union Community Fire Protection District.

Quinn says the men were examples of true heroes because they put their lives on the line every day.

The ceremony also paid tribute to 44 firefighters for acts of bravery. The recipients included Washington Fire Chief Michael Vaughn. Parts of the town of Washington were decimated by tornados last November.

The West Frankfort Fire Department was also recognized, receiving the Firefighter Excellence Award for rescuing a man from a house fire on Oak Street last summer.
