Eldorado Man Asks City Leaders to Limit Gaming Licenses
ELDORADO -- During a recent town meeting, a member of the American Legion said he was afraid too many video gambling and liquor licenses in town would limit the legion's ability to make money. But city leaders say they have to be fair to everybody.
The Eldorado American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars have been contributing to the community for many years.
"We make our money in Eldorado. We spend our money in Eldorado," says legion commander Danny Seagraves.
Members like Seagraves are concerned they may not have the funds to contribute like they have in the past. A new establishment about to open in town will sell liquor and offer video gambling.
Seagraves says if the city continues to allow these licenses, the clubs could lose business. "RIght now, I don't know how many licenses they actually have."
The legion charges dues for its members, so many people may choose to go to other establishments that offer free gaming.
Finance Commissioner Jim Morris says he sees both sides of the issue.
"The city of Eldorado supports those clubs in every way that we can because they are so supportive to other aspects of our community."
Seagraves has asked city leaders to consider limiting the number of licenses they issue, that way their clubs can continue to provide services for the community. "We, just being a small town, we're just kind of asking if they could just limit them. Go back into their bylaws or something and limit them to so many."
"We see his concern but we also feel that it would not be fair to the other citizens if they wanted to open an establishment and we have a license available," says Morris.
Seagraves is worried that more businesses will come to town offering video gaming, and business for the legion will plummet.
"Members of the legion have said, 'What's this going to do?' We don't know what it's going to do until it happens. We're just trying to, as you say, nip it in the bud."
Morris says right now the board will consider Seagrave's request to further limit liquor and gaming licenses in Eldorado.
