Early Morning Shooting in Cairo
UPDATED: SUNDAY JUNE 8, 2014 10:35 P.M.
CAIRO -- An early Sunday morning shooting outside a Cairo nightclub left one man dead. Witnesses say it happened outside the Cavalier Club just minutes after the club had let out for the night, and it took place within a crowd of people.
"Me and my friends we were just sitting outside chilling and the next thing you know we heard gunshots," said Cairo resident Shay Allen. "I just saw a bunch of females standing around, jumping and screaming, calling for help."
Cairo police were the first to arrive on the scene. The Cape Girardeau County Coroner confirms a 27-year-old Missouri man was the person killed in the shooting. It happened just one block from where Allen and her mother live.
"Anybody could have gotten hit, so yeah, I'm thankful that me and my mama was safe," said Allen. "It's so close to where we stay."
State police aren't saying anything about the shooting or who may be responsible, but Allen's mother, Sharel Horton, believes the shooter never entered the club.
"As you see, he has cameras out here, he has cameras on the inside, he has a metal detector when you walk through," said Horton. "It's safe in there, you feel safe and you have people patrolling the door."
Horton says more than 100 people were outside the club for most of the night. That's where she believes the altercation began.
"There were a lot of people outside that didn't come in the club," explained Horton. "And it escalated outside the club."
She believes a lot of the recent fights in Cairo have involved residents from across the river in Missouri and wouldn't be surprised if this shooter was from there too.
