Dangers of Car Decals

By Sam Jones

WSIL -- Car decals are more common than ever. The decorations often show off family members and pets for all the world to see. But police say many of those stickers can actually put your family in harm's way.

When you're driving down the road, you're likely worrying about accidents and bad drivers, but did you ever think a little creativity on your vehicle could put you at risk?

“You're exposing yourself unnecessarily to your information being taken,” explained Illinois State Trooper Joey Watson.

He advises keeping personal info under wrap, saying generic decals are usually safe, while others leave you vulnerable.

“People are putting too much of themselves out there, and they're exposing themselves to that unnecessary risk,” Watson said.

Some stickers tell everyone how many people are in your family, if there are any pets to worry about, even if it's a two-parent household.

“You see that car sitting out front. Now you know you have a mom and dad and three kids, a German Shepard,” Watson added.

We took to the streets to see how drivers in Williamson County felt.

“I've been known as a paranoid mom for a lot of things, but I don't see anything wrong with that,” explained Amber Wollard.

Wollard's a mother of 4, and proud of it.

“Some people don't think they're safe and it can bring attention to who all's in your car, but I really don't see anything wrong with it. I don't think anybody's gonna follow me around just cuz I have stickers on my car,” she admitted.

Saundra Jones's truck doesn't have any stickers on it, mostly because of her military husband.

“He doesn't like bumper stickers, and he feels that personal information is dangerous. People can, you know, just use it against us,” she explained.

However, Jones thinks they create potential for accidents to happen.

“Even I, myself, have gotten a little bit closer and closer to read what it says, and I'm thinking I'm way too close now. So, I think its more of a hazard,” Jones said.

Police suggest erring on the side of caution. Rely on common sense, and always be aware of who's around you and your family.
