WILLIAMSON COUNTY-- The heat has arrived in Southern Illinois, and thanks to thieves, a pair of Herrin doctors are sweating it out. The crooks hit overnight at two offices in the medical complex at the Route 13/148 intersection. They made off with four air conditioning units.

“My first comment was, ‘are you kidding me?’” Doctor William Hays admitted.

He got a call Thursday morning from nurses at his Herrin practice, who noticed their two large AC units were missing.

“You just feel vulnerable when something like that happens,” he said.

Hays’ office is tucked away, so he never expected to be the target of thieves.

“They were in the cage. We never had a problem; we come and go overnight,” added Hays.

Inside, the temperature climbed to nearly 80 degrees before 9 a.m., so they decided to close up until next week, when the new units arrive

“We’ve had to cancel a lot of people's appointments. Unfortunately had to inconvenience a lot of people, lose income obviously,” he explained.

There were 75 appointments to be exact. They'll have to double up, to make up for lost time.

“It’s very shocking. It’s very hot inside and our patients don't like it. We don't like it either; we never expected such a thing in this area,” said Dr. Sushil Tibrewala.

Just across the medical complex, he was hit, too.

“It was hot inside. We thought our air conditioner was not working so we called the air conditioner people  and they came outside and were shocked to see both the air conditioners were tampered with and they're gone.,” he added.

His units were pried from their protective cages, likely around the same time Dr. Hays' were taken.

“We were told they have some instrument that can cut through and get the metal out and sell it,” Tibrewala explained.

The thefts are a major violation against two men who have devoted their lives to helping people.

Herrin police were on scene Thursday afternoon, dusting for fingerprints and collecting evidence. No word on any arrests tonight.
