Event Description

"Anything Goes,” the effervescent toe-tapping ship board musical sets sail July 30-August 4 at the McLeod Theater. With a cargo full of Cole Porter hit songs, this Broadway classic has delighted audiences since it first weighed anchor in 1934.The show is this season’s All Southern High School Theatre Project production which is presented in partnership by the McLeod Summer Playhouse and Carbondale Community Arts. The annual project offers an opportunity for talented regional high school performers to work with a professional producing team, and create a unique and wonderful experience for the community and the young artists involved. In the past few years the program has been expanded to include music and dance classes and technical and producing staff intern positions.

“Anything Goes” is a lavish, funny and tune-filled show that rides the high-tide of spectacular musicals. With tap-dancing sailors, a bevy of beautiful “angels” and power-packed production numbers it tells the story of handsome young stockbroker Billy Crocker who boards the ocean-liner S.S. American to deliver his boss’s misplaced passport. When he sees the girl of his dreams, beautiful debutante Hope Harcourt, on board and engaged to marry stuffy English millionaire Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, Billy stows away and solicits the help of his friend, nightclub singer turned evangelist Reno Sweeney (who has a crush on him), and on-the-lamb gangster Moonface Martin, to win her back. Disguises, mistaken identities and crazy schemes add layers of complication to a score of fantastic songs till true love, for everybody, wins in the end.
“Anything Goes,” docks at the McLeod Summer Playhouse July 30–August 4 with performances Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the McLeod Theater located in the Communications Building on the SIU Carbondale campus. Tickets for the production are $16 for adults and $8 for students, and can be obtained in person Monday-Friday, noon-5 p.m. at the McLeod Theater or Arena Box Office, online at playhouse.siu.edu, by phone at 618/453-6000, or at the McLeod Theater box office one hour before each performance.
