SAFE presents the first in a series of informational programs about fracking. SAFE (Southern Illinoisans Against Fracturing our Environment) urges everyone in Southern Illinois to educate themselves about the dangers of fracking.Return to event list.
High volume hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ is a new method of natural gas and oil extraction involving mile long horizontal wells, and injection of water, sand, and toxic chemicals into the ground at high pressure to fracture rock layers and release oil/gas.
Fracking is exempt from key federal regulations that protect public health and the environment, including air, water and soil. Although the Illinois General Assembly passed regulations on fracking, they are woefully inadequate to protect Southern Illinois from the dangers of fracking.
