The Moccasin Gap Trail Run and Heepwah 5k is hosted by Camp Ondessonk. Race proceeds go to the Camp Ondessonk Scholarship Fund that supports families that could not send their children to camp without it.
The Moccasin Gap Trail Run’s course is a series of scenic and challenging trails. The rugged 10-mile route takes runners past some of the outdoor highlights of Camp Ondessonk, such as Cedar Falls, the highest free-falling waterfall in the state, and past one of the 11 known Native American Stone Fort sites in southern Illinois. The trail winds up the ridges and through the sandstone creek valleys of the surrounding Shawnee National Forest, eventually joining up with the River-to-River Trail. Runners will cross rock-bottom creeks, traverse ridge lines on old Forest Service roads, and climb a series of switchbacks, including over a mile of sustained climb to a historic U.S. Forest Service fire observation tower.
The Heepwah 5k Halloween Fun Run takes advantage of a few dirt trails and the gravel roads around Camp Ondessonk’s Lake Echon. It is a rewarding challenge for runners or walkers of any skill level and there is a costume contest with great prizes.
If runners want to make a weekend of it, there is a free Fall Festival with hayrides, pony rides, face painting, free lunch, and a climbing wall after the race. There is also a chance for runners to experience a little bit of summer camp by staying in one of Camp Ondessonk’s signature rustic cabins.
Registration for both race distances is now open at http://moccasingaptrailrun.com/
