Southern Illinois University Holds Ragtime Audition

The SIU Department of Theater and School of Music announce auditions for the upcoming fall musical RAGTIME. It is based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow, and tells the epic story of three ethnic groups in America during the early 20th century immigration experience: African Americans, represented by a Harlem musician; upper-class suburbanites, represented by Mother, the matriarch of a white family in New Rochelle, New York; and Eastern European immigrants, represented a Jewish man from Latvia.Return to event list.
Thirty–five adult/student singer-actors are needed to play over 50 characters, 15 of which are African American.
Three children are also needed: 1 African American boy, 3-5 years old, 1 Caucasian boy 8-12 years old, 1 Caucasian female 8-12 years old .
Actors should prepare a 60 second song that can be sung in full-voice (non-rock or pop) and acted. No monologue is required. A pianist will be provided, piano accompaniment/sheet music is required. Children do not need to prepare anything, but will be assigned something to read, sing, or improvise.
Auditions for Adults/Students will take place Thursday, Aug. 22 and Friday, Aug. 23 beginning at 7:00 p.m. In Altgeld Hall, Room 116. For children, auditions will be held Sunday, Aug 25, 3 p.m. in Altgeld Hall, Room 116.
Rehearsals begin immediately. The show performs Oct. 24-27, Friday – Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.
Actors may schedule an audition appointment by visiting the Department of Theater office, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 12 Noon or 1-4:30 p,m. or by calling 618-453-5741. Actors may sign-up the evening of the audition beginning fifteen minutes before audition start time. All audition appointments will be scheduled at the next available time slot and in the order made.
