Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois Celebrates 40 Years with a Special Family History Conference

Featuring National Speaker, Thomas W. Jones, Ph.D., Certified Genealogist & Certified Genealogical Lecturer. A total of 4 sessions, will be presented.Return to event list.
8 - 9am - Registration & Vendor Fair Open.
9 - 10am - Session 1 - Finding "Unfindable" Ancestors. This session will describe and demonstrate nine approaches to locating difficult-to-trace ancestors.
10:30 - 11:30am - Session 2 - Going Beyond the Bare Bones: Reconstructing Your Ancestors’ Lives. Learn how to extract information from frequently used genealogical sources to create biographies that bring ancestors to life.
11:30am - 1:15pm - Special 40th Anniversary Celebration Lunch, Vendor Fair Browsing, Research Assistance, Genealogy Library Open.
1:15 - 2:15pm - Session 3 - How to Avoid Being Duped by the Internet. Learn practical strategies for discriminating between correct and misleading information; also learn how online genealogical information—even if its accuracy is unknown—can lead to valid conclusions about ancestors.
2:45 - 3:45pm - Session 4 - Missing Something? Getting the Most out of Genealogical Evidence. Five ways to get more information from the genealogical sources: paying attention to all of the evidence in the sources; examining each source’s context; using an entire series; paying better attention to what is not in the source (using negative evidence); and combining sources to build a case.
There will be breaks & Vendor Fair Browsing between sessions.
3:45 - 4pm - Drawing for Door Prizes.
We have something for everyone – beginning, intermediate, or advanced. Registration is $40 for GSSI members, $50 for non-members. Registrations received by July 25th include the special GSSI 40th Anniversary luncheon. Registrations received after July 25th do not include lunch. Early registration is recommended.
