This is the second graduation for This Able Veteran, an organization founded by Behesha Doan, who is also the chief trainer and president. She and other volunteers work hard, spending countless hours training the dogs that will provide a new lease on life for each of the service personnel recovering from the traumas of war.Return to event list.
The four veterans will arrive in Carbondale from their homes around the country on Monday, April 1, and meet their new service animals for the first time at 11 a.m at the This Able Veteran facility. It’s an emotional time of hope and healing.
For the next couple of weeks afterward, these brave military men will become acquainted with their service dogs, training together prior to the graduation ceremony. They will all meet with a veterinarian the morning of April 6 to learn to care for their dogs, they’ll enjoy a dinner sponsored by the Carbondale Rotary and they will even take to the skies on flights from the SIU Airport. A bonfire will wrap up the planned activities.
There will be ongoing TAV T-shirt sales April 1-May 31 at the Neighborhood Co-op, Central Animal Inn, Cool Spoons, The Great Outdoors, Schnucks, Creekside, Marketplace Shell, Murdale True Value, Dale’s Harley-Davidson, Giant City Lodge, Furniture King, Extreme K9/TAV and Warehouse Liquors. Additional shirt sales are planned at various locations around the area in April. For the complete and updated list, visit www.thisableveteran.org.
