The SIU Department of Theater presents the “Big Muddy New Plays Festival, Spring 2013” April 4 – 7. The festival will feature one night of staged readings of new short plays and three evenings of the staged reading of new full length plays by SIU playwriting students.Return to event list.
Thursday, April 4, at 7:30 pm is Big Muddy Shorts, Festival Edition. The evening will include five new short plays: Family Picture Day by Jaclyn Muensterman; Just Super by Danny Cox; An Exercise in Art by Eric Brown; One Shot by Megan Abell; Never to Be by Sarah Buto; Snow by Bianca Jaconetty and Carnival by Lindsay Greer.
Friday, April 5, at 7:30 pm, Jaclyn Muensterman debuts her new play, Girl Who Wears Her Pants Too High. On her birthday, a quirky young woman sets out to plan a funeral for a man she hardly knows. Her wacky journey is helped and hindered by a homeless man and a long lost relative, as she confronts issues of control in a chaotic world.
Saturday, April 6, at 7:30 pm is Descartes à la Mode by Thomas Michael Campbell. A high-school teacher's introduction of Descartes' Meditations is only the beginning of his problems as he juggles a rocky friendship, a burgeoning relationship, and a dangerous situation with a student, all while fighting to stay sober.
Sunday, April 7, at 2pm is Ghostlight / In a Kingdom Not Very Far Away by Lindsay Greer. Women from very different worlds face similar struggles in these two plays which ask what it means to give up your body to supernatural forces and can a dominatrix find her fairy tale ending?
There will be a reception after the Big Muddy Shorts, Festival Edition on Thursday, April 4, which is open to all artists, guests and audience members. Following the Friday, Saturday and Sunday readings, there will be a talk back with guest respondent Sarah Bowden, the playwright, and SIU playwriting professor, Jacob Juntunen. Everyone is invited to attend.
All readings will be in the C. H. Moe Theater in the Communications Building on the SIU Campus. Tickets are $6.00/evening, general admission, and can be obtained Mon. – Fri. 12 – 5:30 pm in person at the McLeod or Shryock Box Office, by phone at 618-453-6000, or online. Tickets are also available at the McLeod Theater Box office, one hour before each performance. Audiences are reminded that all performances are general admission, with seating on a first come first served basis.
