Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra Presents Annual "Stars of Altgeld" Concert

The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, under Musical Director Edward Benyas, presents its annual “Stars of Altgeld” concert. This popular program features winners of the annual School ofReturn to event list.
Music Solo and Composition Contests. This year’s winners of the Solo Competition are Edward Charity and Petra Bubanja, Violins, and Ben Elwood, Trumpet. The winner of the 3rd annual Composition Contest is Ken Carr, a retired SIUC employee, alum, and nontraditional student from Murphysboro, studying Composition with Dr. Frank Stemper.
The SISO will premiere his work, titled, “The Civil War Touches Southern Illinois: A Portrait of General John A. Logan,” with narration provided by Dr. Harvey Welch and conducted by SISO Assistant Conductor, Joseph Ryker. Concluding the first half, School of Music Director and Voice Professor, Dr. Jeanine Wagner, will sing a virtuoso Mozart aria from the opera, Abduction from the Seraglio, which features prominent solos by SISO Principal Flute, Oboe, Violin and Cello players. The second half of the program consists entirely of the lushly romantic 2nd Symphony of the Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. Regular tickets are $20. Tickets for students of any age are $8. Tickets are available in advance, and at the door the night of the performance if you come early. Call or go online to purchase tickets in advance.
The SISO and soloists will present an hour-long free admission abbreviated version of the evening concert, for school children, at 10am on March 21 at Shryock. No reservations are necessary.
